Panic Pandemic Packaging

What if we could produce sustainable packaging from recycled face masks?

Online shoppers should not be able to ignore the impact produced by constant shipments of boxes. This speculative object obliges companies to handle and recycle used face masks: this process includes the disinfection of those. This step is particularly relevant, as it symbolizes a ‘dirty’ industry taking care of a ‘dirty’ product of our times.

The speculative outcome acts on both sides: the companies must use recycled packaging, while the users are given a maximum amount of orders per month.

What if we could produce sustainable packaging from recycled face masks?

The real virus is our compulsive shopping behaviour. Using recycled face masks as packaging might prove challenging in practical terms but illustrate metaphorically that the online shopping industry is as dirty as the dirty masks that would be used as packaging.

How does this tackle climate change?
Each user has a maximum of packages per month, limiting the impact due to the shipping industry. A decrease in online shopping has a positive take on the planet, together with the use of recycled long-lasting materials.

What is your motivation to build this object?
We want to raise awareness of the downsides of consumerism. The massive usage of face masks, even though necessary, should not be ignored as a problem that we are creating. On the other side, we want to highlight the labour work put into the shipping sector.

Who is the user of this object?
Our object appeals to online shoppers

What function does it serve?
It gives a new life to used face masks: being made of polypropylene, they are already water-resistant.

In what way did COVID-19 influence it?
We are encouraged and sometimes forced to wear face masks in public spaces. In a time where single-use objects, such as straws and cups, are slowly being outfaced.

Face masks are necessary during pandemics. However, online shopping is not. Bringing these two elements together we can give a new purpose to an excess material while putting a limit on consumerism.
